When the Life You Planned Disappears

Hi Free Spirits,

What happens when the life you were building vanishes overnight? In this week’s conversation, my guest Chanoa Inez shares a story that stopped me in my tracks.

In her 20s, she moved to Montenegro for love. A fresh start. A new country. A new chapter. She woke up one morning after a perfect day… and her boyfriend was gone. A sudden clot took his life. One day she was building a future.

The next day she was standing in the ruins of it. And here is what struck me most. It wasn’t just the loss.It was what happened after. For years, she lived in survival mode. She worked constantly. She developed chronic health issues. She shrank her dreams so she would not risk feeling that level of loss again. And here is the truth so many of us avoid: After loss, we do not just grieve the person. We grieve the version of ourselves who believed in that future.

At some point, without even realizing it, she began minimizing her dreams. Making them smaller. Safer. More “manageable.” Because if the dream is small enough, it cannot devastate you. But small dreams come at a cost. They cost vitality. They cost confidence. They cost alignment.

One of the most powerful things she said was this: “If we’re not dreaming big, we’re not living.” Read that again. If you are not dreaming, you are surviving. And survival mode can last years. In her case, it lasted over a decade before she realized she was still carrying a cloud of grief.

But here is the hopeful part. Reinvention is not reserved for the lucky. It is not something you earn after enough suffering. It is your birthright. So how do you begin again? Here are three powerful reminders from our conversation:

1) Notice where fear has quietly downsized your life.If your dreams feel smaller than they used to, ask yourself why.

2) Check your identity. Are you unconsciously holding onto a story that keeps you in a victim role? Awareness alone can change everything.

3) Develop radical self‑support. She realized that the biggest change was becoming more attentive to her own thoughts. Not allowing herself to speak internally in ways she would never speak to someone she loves.

That level of self‑loyalty changes trajectories. Loss may refine you. Grief may slow you.

But neither gets the final word. If you feel stuck in survival mode… this episode is for you.

Keep flying upstream,

Kristyn
